Adele Bloch-Bauer II

GustavI was walking on the 5th floor of the MoMA and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Adele Bloch-Bauer. She was exquisitely positioned in the center of a room featuring Klimt’s works of art. This painting is called Adele Bloch-Bauer II, which was painted in 1912 – five years after the Woman in Gold was created. From afar, I immediately recognized the pale face of Adele with her jeweled necklace tight around her neck. This same necklace was prominent in Gustav Klimt’s Woman in Gold as well. Yet, the composition of the second portrait is very different from the Woman in Gold. There are no gold textiles adorning Adele’s dress and Klimt uses significantly less shapes to enhance this portrait. Two aspects of the earlier portrait that remain are her elegance and wealth that are depicted through her clothing and her regal posture. Those of you who are fans of Klimt and Adele Bloch-Bauer would thoroughly enjoy seeing this masterpiece.
